Cairo: Hundreds of Egyptian protesters blocked a road in Burullus town and burned tyres on Saturday to protest bread shortages, security sources said.
Police armed with teargas and batons dispersed the crowd. A security source said that police also fired rubber bullets at the crowd.
At least three protesters were hospitalised for teargas inhalation after the clash, sources said.
Protesters accused local officials and bakeries of stealing flour earmarked for subsidised bread, causing shortages.
High wheat prices have put great strain on Egypt's bread subsidy system, where the urban poor depend on cheap bread to survive.
