Cairo: Eritrean asylum seekers fear they may be killed or tortured if they are deported.
Egypt began mass deportations of detained Eritrean asylum seekers this week and plans to forcibly return hundreds more, according to security sources.
Human rights group Amnesty International said the Eritreans faced risk of torture or detention in inhumane conditions if they return to their home country.
"I don't want to live if I have to go back to Eritrea. I know what is waiting for me there," said an Eritrean refugee who gave his name as Ammanuel.
"We came as refugees. If we go back to Eritrea, we may be killed," he said from his jail cell in Ras Gharib, where he said he was being held with 64 other Eritreans.
