New Delhi: Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to make his first official visit to India next week, a move that may strengthen energy ties between the two countries, despite objection from the United States.
Ahmadinejad will arrive in India on April 29 on the way back from a visit in Sri Lanka.
He will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and will likely discuss energy issues during the visit.
The planned visit has received much opposition from Washington, especially concerning a possible revival of a 2005 plan to build pipelines for transporting natural gas.
The proposed pipeline will transport gas daily to both Pakistan and India.
The US believes it will fund Iran’s nuclear programme and urged India to use the talks to push Iran to suspend nuclear enrichment, to which India responded on Tuesday by saying it did not need "any guidance" on conducting its relations.
