Tehran: Iran needs to import 5 million tonnes of wheat this year, the commerce minister was quoted as saying, referring to the Iranian year that ends in March 2009.
Commerce Minister Masoud Mirkazemi said annual consumption stood at 11 million tonnes and with domestic production of 6 million tonnes, "we should import 5 million tonnes of wheat," the English-language Iran News reported.
Mirkazemi also said 1.7 million tonnes of rice should be imported, the difference between forecast domestic production of 1.5 million tonnes and consumption of 3.2 million tonnes, the daily said.
