Baghdad: US Defence Secretary Robert Gates met top military commanders in Iraq on Monday to discuss the pace of US troop reductions.
Gates arrived in Baghdad late on Sunday. He said that talks on troop levels with US commander General David Petraeus would cover a “whole range of possibilities".
There are still 155,000 US troops in Iraq. The US plans to cut down troop levels to 130,000 by July.
Petraeus had said last month that he would need some time to "let things settle a bit" after the initial reduction.
Gates is visiting Baghdad a year after a US-Iraqi security offensive was mounted with the aid of the extra 30,000 US troops to stop violence in the country.
