Abu Dhabi: A delay in forming a national unity government in Lebanon in line with Doha agreement can lead to a catastrophe, Arab League chief Amr Mousa on Tuesday warned.
"I wish a national unity government in Lebanon will be formed very soon to end the country's political crisis. Any delay is not in the interest of the Lebanese people and could lead to a catastrophe," Mousa told a press conference.
Mousa appealed to all Lebanese leaders to put an end to the deteriorating situation in Lebanon.
The Doha deal, brokered by Qatari-led Arab mediators last month led to the election of President Michel Sulaiman and pulled the country back from the brink of a new civil war.
The agreement stipulates the formation of a government where the Hezbollah-led opposition holds veto power. Security incidents and bickering over Cabinet portfolio has held up the mission of Prime Minister-designate Fouad Siniora and raised questions whether the deal would be implemented in full.
But Mousa, ending a short visit to the UAE that included talks with President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Palestine, Lebanon and Sudan, and joint Arab action in general, said the situation in Lebanon does not stand any wait.
'Right' to peaceful energy
On Iran's nuclear standoff, Mousa said the Arab League opposes any military action against Iran which would escalate tension in the Middle East region.
He added that the organisation has been in talks with most of the world countries to find a peaceful solution for Iran's nuclear standoff with the West.
"Iran has a right to benefit from the peaceful uses of nuclear power and it is fair if we want to address Iran's nuclear programme that the same should be done to Israel's nuclear programme," he said.
The Arab leaders believed that the solution should be made under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency, he added.
He called for lifting the siege clamped on the Palestinian people, expressing the hope that Arab leaders have a more effective role in bringing about reconciliation between the Palestinian factions.
He added the Arab league received "very positively" Turkey's mediation in the Israeli-Syrian peace talks, expressing hope that the talks would yield a favourable result.
