Tripoli: Libyan officials have seized 1.5 kilograms of heroin in Tripoli and arrested three foreign workers, while more than one tonne of hashish has been found buried in sand in the Sahara, the interior ministry said on Tuesday.

Crimes involving drugs can be punishable by death. The ministry's anti-drug office gave no details about the hashish discovery and did not say whether anyone had been arrested.

In the heroin case, the statement did not give the nationalities of those arrested.

Libya said the seizures were part of a campaign to "eradicate the drug epidemic" which the ministry termed a "weapon of massive destruction."
