Beirut: Israel is preparing for a new war in Lebanon, according to the deputy leader of Hezbollah.

The warning by Shaikh Naim Kassem comes as Israel began a five-day home front security drill, simulating responses to war and other emergency situations, including large-scale terror attacks.

Kassem said Hezbollah was ready to defend Lebanon.

Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai said the exercise was designed to help the country learn from it’s 34-day war with Hezbollah in 2006. He denied it was related to ongoing tensions along Israel’s northern border with Syria and Lebanon.

But Israeli Arab Knesset member told Gulf News that the drill could foreshadow military action. “Israel is preparing for a war,” he said. “The military leaders aim to restore respect for the Israeli army.”
