Sharjah: Dubai Modern High School rallied to down New Indian Model School, Sharjah, in the opening match of the Indian Basketball League, which took off at the Al Theeqa Club.
This league, lasting two months, was inaugurated by Dr Mohammad Basheer, the former captain of the Indian soccer team.
The inaugural under-13 match itself turned out to be a thriller. Last year's runners-up Dubai Modern High School, despite trailing by 5 points at half time, won the match 27-22.
Modern High scored 13 points against 6 in the third quarter to overtake NIMS, Sharjah. Munif scored all the 13 points for Modern High in the third quarter.
Millennium shine
In the under-13 girls' event, Millennium outplayed Delhi Private School, Dubai, 20-11. Geethanjali hogged the limelight with 8 points for Millennium. Aishwarya chipped in with four points.
In the men's division, defending champions Hoofbeatz Hustlers from Dubai got off to a winning start. They beat debutant Titans from Dubai 70-46.
It was a match dominated by the Hustlers from the start.
By half time, the Hustlers were 45-18 ahead. Viswanath and Arafat top-scored for the Hustlers with 11 points each.
This league, which will provide opportunities for many talented youngsters, will be played on weekends. On Thursdays, matches will be played at the Etisalat Academy Stadium in Ghusais from 8pm.
On Fridays, matches will be played from 3pm at Al Theeqa Club, Sharjah.
The under-13 boys' and girls' matches will be played on Saturdays from 9a.m. at Dubai Cambridge International School, Garhoud.
Nine teams are participating in the men's division while five teams are battling it out for glory in the women's event.
Seven schools are competing in the under-13 boys event, while five schools are taking parting in the girls under-13 section.
The league has got sponsorship support from Dr. Sunny's Medical Centre, Sharjah, UAE Exchange Centre, Sharjah, J Mart, ETA, Dhanya Group of Companies, Giordano Fashions, Blade Watches, and Eiffel Printing Services, Sharjah.

U-13 Boys: (Dubai Modern High School: 27 (Munif 20, Sai Krishna 3, Shann 2, Kevin V 2) beat NIMS, Sharjah 22 (Imran 3, Joshua Paul 19, Muneer 5, Riyas 1, Adam Abraham 4).
U-13 Girls: Millennium School, Dubai 20 (Geethanjali 8, Aishwarya 4, Shreya 2, Sindhu 2, Katyani 4) beat DPS, Dubai 11 ( Sonali 4, Namrata 2, Anvita 2, Swati 1, Shifali 2).
