Dubai: Most Filipino boxing fans living in Dubai woke up early on Sunday to watch the live telecast of the Las Vegas fight between Manny Pacquiao or 'Pacman' and Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico from the comforts of their homes.
This was a rematch of their May 8, 2004 fight that ended in a split-draw. It created heated arguments on who really is the best super featherweight boxer in the world. Now, the debate is settled - at least for a while.
Carl Vincent Semine: "I was expecting Pacquiao's fight with Marquez to be like his second and third battles with Morales, also a counter puncher like Marquez where he feints, then attacks, threw some combination punches then moved back and come forward again with combination of solid punches, when Marquez had already thrown a counter punch. Pacquiao won because he hits harder but Marquez deserves a rematch. The business is not over yet. I felt empty."
Aldwin Rowald Abada: "Pacman seemed to be effortless in delivering his punches - it appeared he intentionally wanted the bout to last the 12 rounds.
There is no doubting 'Pacman's skill, but luck was on his side as well. Although the victory hasn't been so convincing, I am still proud to be a Filipino!
Doyle Mijares: "The first couple of rounds was a bit disappointing but when Pacman knocked down Marquez, all of us were on our feet shouting as if I were inside the Mandalay Bay. But Marquez recovered and gave Pacman a hard time.
Josef Maniquis: "Yes, now Pacman came out on top but it could have gone either way. If you are looking for a balanced opinion about this fight, you could easily say that the best decision would have been a draw for Pacman.
Do you think Pacquiao is one of the most influential Asian sportspersons ever? Would you rate him as one of the lightweight boxing greats?

Marquez won thru the media and spectators, but Pacquaio won through the judges. Lomat Abu Dhabi,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 12:27
Definitely, Pacman is the most influential sportsman, especially in today's boxing era. Just think of the happenings back home on Pacman's boxing day - zero or less reported crime, no heavy traffic, ceasefire between the military and rebels. It's truly amazing, isn't it? I am so proud of Pacman's performance and he has shown the world that Filipinos are great boxers! I am from Bohol, and we have another boxer from our place, Bombom Bautista. He is a legendary boxer. Ed Abu Dhabi,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 10:57
It was a close fight and could go either way. But you can't really give all the close rounds to one fighter, in the end, the third round knockdown of Marquez proved the difference. Go Pacman! First Asian to hold three world titles in as many categories. Fourth one will come in June! John Sharjah,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 09:54
I am a Filipino so YES, I do rate him as one of the best lightweights ever to play the game. He's defeated the best but still begs for a rematch with Marquez (I'm not convinced). He's got charisma, he's like Tyson. He's phenomenal for me. Jehan Dubai,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 09:38
I do believe that Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao is one of the most influential Asian sportspersons ever. He can easily exceed the greatness of the region's best dollar-earners in sports. He is not only one of the lightweight boxing greats but perhaps the greatest. It was Pacquiao who made boxing alive today in the world. Juan Davao City,Philippines Posted: March 17, 2008, 09:30
Pacquiao is now the first Filipino and the first Asian to get three world titles in three different divisions. And yes, he is known all over America and other parts of the world. We are proud of him because he made a legacy that Filipinos can become famous also, with the likes of Mike Tyson, Mohammad Ali and other great boxers from different countries. And so for Manny Pacquiao, enjoy what is rightfully yours and mabuhay ka! Clark Dubai,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 09:29
Some might call it luck but I say luck favours the determined. And that is the reason why Pacquiao's hands were raised after the final bell. He is the most determined fighter in the world right now! Joey Dubai,UAE Posted: March 17, 2008, 02:58
