Sharjah: Darrell Hair, who is currently officiating in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Intercontinental Cup matches being held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, will officiate in the forthcoming under-19 World Cup in Malaysia from February 17 to March 2.
"Hair will be in Malaysia primarily as a continuation of his work with the accreditation and mentoring of development-level umpires," said the ICC umpires' manager, Doug Cowie.
Hair, who was at the centre of a ball-tampering controversy at The Oval when Pakistan forfeited a Test for the first time in the history, was banned by the ICC in November 2006.
Speaking to Gulf News after returning to umpiring in the UAE-Namibia Intercontinental Cup match at the Sharjah Stadium last week, Hair said: "I like to keep umpiring and contribute to the game. I want to do my part for the development of the game."
Hair will be officiating in the development tournaments like World Cricket League and ICC Intercontinental Cup and also assisting in the coaching of emerging umpires.
"It is a chance for the ICC to identity emerging talent and provide them with intense individual mentoring and coaching over the course of the under-19 event and also give them direction for the future," added Cowie.
Hair will also be officiating in the Namibia-Kenya Intercontinental Cup match, starting from today at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium and will then fly to Malaysia for the under-19 World Cup, to be contested by 10 full-member nations and five regional qualifiers.
Javagal Srinath, Mike Procter and Chris Broad are the match referees for the under-19 World Cup which is to be held in three cities in Malaysia.
