Sharjah: Kyle Hogg, the 24-year-old grandson of former West Indies player Sonny Ramadhin, bowled Lancashire to a 65-run victory over Essex in the third match of the Arch Trophy cricket tournament at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Hogg ripped through the Essex middle-order, taking 4 wickets for 29 runs. He picked up the wickets of England's rising star Ravi Bopara, James Foster, Ryan Tendoeschate and Alex Tudor.
Essex were bowled out for 192 runs chasing Lancashire's total of 255 for 9.
Lancashire won the toss. Their openers Gareth Cross and Iain Sutcliffe put on 76 runs. Essex's Tim Philips had Cross caught by James Middlebrook for 33. Middlebrook then went on to dismiss Sutcliffe - who hit 54 off 54 balls with 8 fours and a six - Seven Croft for 19 and skipper Stuart Law for 23.
Andrew Flintoff then walked out to bat for the first time since his fourth ankle operation. He played some lovely shots and hit an elegant 39 before Tendoeschate bowled him through the gates to disturb his off stump.
Luke Sutton then kept the scoreboard moving with an unbeaten 51. Bopara picked two quick wickets to restrict Lancashire to a challenging total.
Essex began their chase confidently. Everyone expected Flintoff to bowl, but he opted to give himself a break. Opener and skipper Mark Pettini, along with his partner Jason Gallion, put on 57 runs.
Seven Croft, Simon Marshall and Hogg struck repeatedly to reduce Essex to 85 for 4.
Hogg virtually tilted the match in favour of Lancashire in the 13th over, dismissing Bopara for 1 and Foster for a duck.
Tim Philips and Tendoeschate saw Essex past the 100-run mark, but the target looked too far away. Marshall stuck twice to clean bowl Middlebrook and David Masters.
The Essex innings ended when Hogg had Tudor brilliantly caught by Flintoff at long off.
Essex will now take on Somerset at Abu Dhabi's Zayed Cricket Stadium from 2pm today, while Lancashire will meet Sussex tomorrow at the same venue.
Essex will also meet Sussex at the Sharjah stadium on Thursday.
