Ajman: UAE will have a Combined University cricket team for the first time in the history of domestic cricket.

The Ajman Cricket Council will be staging an Inter-University tournament today to create the first Combined University team from among the ten participating teams.

"Our Council will stage an inter university cricket tournament for the first time. Eighteen top performers from the different teams participating in this tournament will be picked to form the Combined University team," remarked Shaji Ul Mulk, Secretary General of the Ajman Cricket Council, to Gulf News.

"This Combined University team will be allowed to play in all the Ajman council tournaments free of cost. This is mainly aimed at grooming young talent to represent UAE in international matches," added Mulk. The participating teams have been divided into two pools. In pool A are Mahe Manipal University, Harriot Watt, Troy University, Szabist and ECMIT and in pool B are EHSAL, Emirates Aviation College, Preston University, Middlesex University and American University of Sharjah. The tournament is being sponsored by Mulk Holdings and Preston University.

Knock-out basis

"We are charging only a nominal entrance fee of Dh500. There will be individual awards for best batsman, best bowler, best fielder, best wicketkeeper, man of the series and man of the match from the knockout stage," he said.

The matches will be played on the council's astro turf wicket on a league cum knock-out basis.

"This tournament will be a twenty-20 event but we have plans to stage a 50-over inter university tournament too," said Mulk.
