Dead Sea, Jordan: Shaikh Abdullah Al Qasimi completed a memorable day for UAE here in the Jordan Rally when he won the Group N title after his younger brother Shaikh Khalid had become the first UAE driver to manage a top-10 finish in the WRC category.
It was Shaikh Abdullah's first taste of WRC competition and he finished 15th in his Mitsubishi to top the Group N category.
Shaikh Abdullah started the final day behind another UAE driver Shaikh Suhail Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum but the latter retired from 12th place on the penultimate stage. Shaikh Abdullah did well to tackle the treacherous roads and score a fine win.
"This is my first WRC event and I am thrilled. It was very difficult out there, almost like driving on ice, very slippery," he told Gulf News after his win.
"While the 15th-place result in an event which took a heavy toll of some of the most experienced drivers is a great result, it is the experience of competing with the world's best that has been very rewarding," said Shaikh Abdullah.
Commenting on his younger brother's top-10 finish and narrowly missing his first WRC points, Shaikh Abdullah said: "He is still young and needs all the experience. Khalid's ninth-place finish is a great achievement and he fully deserves it."
