Sharjah:  Following the tremendous response from cricket lovers and players to the Alam Steel four-nation cricket tournament it has been decided to stage the event every year.

"We had revived this tournament after a gap of 18 years but following the the huge response we will stage it as an annual event and make it bigger next year," said Shyam Bhatia of Alam Steel, the main sponsor of the event.

"We will include teams from South Africa and England as some players from these countries have expressed their willingness to play here," added Bhatia.

Organised by the Emirates Cricket Board on behalf of all the councils, the event was inaugurated by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar.

Emirates India, Emirates Pakistan, Emirates Sri Lanka and Emirates Rest competed in this 50-over tournament.

Pakistan won the tournament beating Sri Lanka in the final at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday. The winners trophy was presented by International Cricket Council President Ray Mali.

"Such keenly contested tournaments can produce good talent and I will request David Morgan, the next president of the ICC, to be the guest of honour next year," said Mali.

The tournament was first held in 1986 with Pakistan emerging as the champions. In 1988 Pakistan defended the title but lost to India in 1989. In 1990 Sri Lanka beat Pakistan.
