Dubai: Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Asif, who was detained at the Dubai airport last month for carrying 0.24gms of opium, has tested positive for a banned substance during the Indian Premier League.
The fast bowler failed a random drugs test conducted by the International Doping Tests and Management (IDTM), a Sweden-based agency. He had played for the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL.
Asif's case is referred to a three-member IPL Drugs Tribunal, which includes former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar.
The 25-year-old expressed shock at the result and said that he will decide on having his B sample tested in consultation with the Pakistan Cricket Board officials.
The PCB was to announce the preliminary squad for the Champions Trophy on Monday and Asif was expected to return to the squad. The team will now be announced on Tuesday.
In October 2006, the PCB suspended Asif along with teammate Shoaib Akhtar after they failed drug tests.
The PCB has announced that strict action will be taken against players failing doping tests.
Asif, who made his international debut in 2005, has played in 11 Test matches and taken 51 wickets and 36 wickets from 31 one-dayers.
