Dubai:  Ricky Ponting or Kevin Pietersen could end up playing Indian domestic cricket following a series of rule changes.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to allow the state teams to sign four players from outside their state.

The BCCI's technical committee, chaired by former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar, took the decision after the success of the Indian Premier League, which attracted huge crowds when top players from different countries played in the league.

Guest regulations

Niranjan Shah, secretary of the BCCI, said: "One of the four players could be a cricketer from overseas, who has played at least 10 Tests and/or 20 ODIs.

"However, a maximum of three 'Guest' players will be permitted to figure in the playing XI at a given point of time.

"The last date for the state associations to register the 'Guest' players will be 1st September every year."

Over the last few years the once popular domestic tournaments, like the Ranji Trophy and Iran Trophy, have attracted poor crowds.

With top international cricketers taking part, the standard of the competition would be expected to improve.

The committee also believes that domestic cricketers would benefit from having the opportunity to play alongside top internationals.

Rich associations

Some of the associations, such as the Cricket Association of Bengal and the Mumbai Cricket Association, have plenty of cash and could afford to bring in some top cricketers to play for their team.

The committee also discussed various amendments in the playing conditions for domestic tournaments.

It was decided that Powerplay rule should continue during the coming season.
