Dubai: Indian first class cricketers may soon get a pay hike in the coming season.
Until around three seasons ago, domestic cricketers were paid very poorly in comparison with those who go on to represent the country and play in international matches.
In the 2006-2007 season first class cricketers received Rs26,000 (Dh2000 approx.) for each match day. From a four-day match a cricketer could easily pocket about Rs100,000 (Dh9000 approx).
A decision to raise the pay is to be presented during the oncoming annual general meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. According to sources, every first class cricketer playing in the Ranji, Deodhar, Challengers and Duleep Trophies may now get Rs37,000 (Dh3200 approx.) per day.
The Indian Cricket Board is keen to improve the standard of domestic cricket with attractive payment for players to ensure that even the top cricketers play in the domestic matches.
Meanwhile, the Indian board has cleared a tour of New Zealand by the Indian team during March next year.
