Abu Dhabi: The French School and the German School in the capital posted contrasting victories as the Abu Dhabi Sports Council's Under-13 football tournament - sponsored by Sorouh - started on Wednesday.

The German School managed to score a 4-3 win over Al Raha International School in a Group A match of the eight-team event being held under the patronage of Shaikh Zayed Bin Hazza Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Philip Geitner of the German School was named man of the match.

Fine individual display

In another match in the same group, Abu Dhabi Health and Fitness Club (ADHFC) scored a big 13-0 win over Al Wardiya Private School. Mohsin Abdullah of ADHFC was named man of the match for his fine individual display.

Playing in the second group, French School, Abu Dhabi had a rather easy outing with an 8-0 win over Al Worood Private Academy. Alexandre Descarriere was named MVP in this encounter.

In another Group B match, Al Zafra Private School edged out Football for All team 1-0 with Ali Tareq impressing to win the MVP award.

Mohammad Al Mahmoud, secretary general of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, inaugurated the tournament and said it was the first step in getting a bigger league for expatriate children in the capital. "Today is a small step and quite a few teams do not have regular teams. But many have evinced interest in the competition and we are keen to make this event bigger and better. We thank Sorouh for their support," Al Mahmoud said.
