Dubai: "The goal which I scored at the start of the second half should have been allowed because I was not in an offside position," protested Al Wasl's striker Alexander Olivera following his team's 1-0 loss in the Asian Champions League match.

Al Wasl striker Mohammad Ennazy also rued Diaz's missed penalty.

"We were unlucky that we couldn't level the score despite the sitters we got in the second half. They scored and defended well. If we scored from the spot, we could have won the match," he said.

Even though Diaz missed such a crucial kick the Al Wasl supporters have not deserted him.

Three points

"We still love Diaz, even if he lost an important penalty kick. He is a gifted striker and we are not angry from him," some said after the match.

Meanwhile the Al Wasl team manager Esmail Rashid is hoping to pull out all the stops in an attempt to stay in contention.

"If we want to reach the quarterfinals, we must win in Iran next week, that is the only way to stay in contention," he said.

UAE national team coach Bruno Metsu praised the performance of the Iraqi club.

"The Iraqi team played well, they have good talented played especially in midfield. Al Wasl lost several scoring opportunities although they did well in the second half," he said.

Haitham Jasim the Al Quwa Al Jawiya skipper commented: "Winning three points in an away match against a strong opponent like Al Wasl is excellent, its a marvellous start for us."

Striker Ali Mansour was thrilled to have scored the all-important goal for his team

"It is a valuable goal which gave us the victory. I hope we continue with the same performance next week in Kuwait," he said.

Match referee Khalil Al Ghamdi believes it was a very special match.

"It was one of the best matches I officiated in recent months, I enjoyed it. If Diaz scored from the spot, the second half could have been a different story," he said.
