Abu Dhabi:  The domestic first division football league could be heading for a play-off to decide the championship.

Five teams are currently in the hunt for the title but if two teams end with the same points a play-off will be arranged.

It is understood the clash will not be staged before July, more than a month after the end of the league on May 25.

The FA is unable to stage play-offs before the end of the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup from June 2 to the 22.

The UAE national team will gather on May 26 in a domestic training camp in Al Ain preparing for their matches, which will kick-off on June 2 away to Iran.

A source in the UAE FA told Gulf News that if the league title is to be decided in a play-off, then it will be held either in the last week of June or the first week of July.

Al Shabab, leaders with 35 points and Al Jazira., Al Ahli and Sharjah, each with 32, have a chance to win the title with nine points at stake in the remaining weeks of the league.
