Abu Dhabi: Al Wahda striker Mohammad Al Shehhi may not be available for his country's crucial match against Iran on June 2 in the Asian qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup.
Al Shehhi, who was nursing an ankle injury, was taken to hospital during the Abu Dhabi Derby between Al Wahda and Al Ain, which his team won 4-3, including a spectacular goal from Al Shehhi.
The doctors said the player was suffering from damaged ankle ligaments and would need three weeks to recover. That effectively rules him out of his team's last league match against Al Ahli and probably also the World Cup qualifiers against Iran.
Meanwhile, Bruno Metsu, the UAE head coach, has expressed his delight at the outstanding form of Al Shehhi and Al Ahli striker Faisal Khalil in the domestic competitions. Metsu said former captain Abdul Rahim Jumaa, who returned to Al Wahda recently, following a long injury layoff, is also playing at his best.
Metsu is expected to invite Jumaa to join the team's training camp from May 26 in Al Ain, in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers in which the UAE will face Iran, Kuwait and Syria.
The UAE currently lead Group 5 with 4 points from 2 matches followed by Iran.
