Dubai: The General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW) will establish the first centre for drug testing in the UAE.

Ebrahim Abdul Malek, the general secretary of GAYSW and the general secretary of the National Olympic Committee, has issued instructions to form a committee to make studies and follow up to establish the first drug test centre in the country.

The committee will be chaired by Dr Abdul Qader Al Khayat and the members are: Mohammad Obaid Al Sallaqy, Abdul Hamid Al Attar, Shaikha Ahmad Obaid, Dr Ehssan Al Marzouqi, Major Khalid Hussain Taqi and Asma Elsherrif.

The decision came in accordance with the GAYSW policy to create a scientific approach and implement the government strategy to keep our youth away from bad behaviour by fighting against drugs and drug users and establishing the drug test centre is a huge step on that way.

The general secretary stipulated that the committee will make the necessary studies, including the technical and financial studies, concerning the establishment of the centre and a strategy for its management and operation.

The GAYSW had last month signed a memorandum with the National Olympic Committee and the Dubai Convention for Activity techniques and Research to establish the drug test centre.

The committee will decide on the sharing of responsibilities by the different parties, who signed the memorandum, and their contributions in establishing and operating the centre.
