Dubai: Ebrahim Abdul Malek, secretary general of the General Authority of Youth and Sports Welfare (GAYSW), expressed his satisfaction with the associations elections concluded last week.

"I take this opportunity to congratulate all the winners in the elections of the nine associations ended last week. Also I wish good luck to those who entered the elections and couldn't win. In fact I am pleased with them even if they fail to win, because their decision to take part in the elections was a brave decision," said Abdul Malek.

He added that democracy will continue and there will be no set back.

"We are practising democracy in a sophisticated way and it proves that its a successful process which we will continue to execute in forming associations. We will never retreat to form associations through appointments."

Nine associations elections was held from June 15 to 26: basketball, volleyball, handball, table tennis, cycling, chess, karate, athletics and swimming.

All the associations elected a lady in its board due to the GAYSW decision to have one seat for ladies in each association.

A new era

"We began a new era with the ladies in the associations board of directors. I hope the presence of ladies in the associations will be an addition to develop the ladies sports in the UAE.

"Also I want from the associations board of directors chairmen and members to help the ladies in the board to do their job properly and give them all the assistance needed to make the change and promote the ladies sport," said the GAYSW secretary general.

He asked all chairmen and members to work hard in the coming four years.

"I take this opportunity to ask all the winners in the elections in all associations to co-operate and work hard," said Malek. "Because there are a lot of responsibilities and ambitions have to be achieved in the coming period.

National interest

"The new board members are asked to put the national interest on top and before their clubs or self interest. We want them to do their best in developing the standard of sports in the country to achieve great success and compete powerfully in international and continental level."
