Dubai: Sean Thornberry (3) (EGC) scored a gross one over par 73 to win the Arabian Ranches Junior Open Golf Championship, supported by US Kids Golf on Saturday.
Sixteen-year-old Thornberry had nines of 35 and 38 including an impressive 5 gross birdies in his round. Thornberry had birdies on holes 1, 3, 6, 9 and 12 with bogeys on holes 2, 4, 7 and 18 and a double bogey on hole 10.
The tournament attracted a full field of 87 golfers - boys and girls, expats as well as UAE nationals - who were all aged 17 or under on the day of the event. The format was 18 Hole Medal with play from the 6,531 yards par 72 course with full handicap allowance. In addition the tournament was deemed a Qualifier for Handicap Purposes. There was also a Young Times US Kids Skills Challenge for those juniors not yet at the Playing Certificate stage involving Putting, Chipping and Long Driving Mini-Tournaments.
In second place a shot behind the champion was Matthew Turner (EGC) with a 74 in a 3 way back.
