Augusta: Overnight co-leader Justin Rose of Britain tumbled out of US Masters contention with an ugly triple-bogey eight in Friday's second round.
The 27-year-old Englishman, who had opened with a sparkling four-under-par 68, found water at the par-five 15th after laying up in two on his way to a 78.
"The 15th was a 20-second lapse in concentration," Rose told reporters after posting a 36-hole total of two-over 146.
"In hindsight, I probably should have gone for the green. It was right on the limit, just one of those things."
A four-times winner on the European Tour, Rose struck his third shot into the water guarding the front of the green, took a penalty drop and overhit the green with his fifth.
He then chipped right across the front of the green from the back with his sixth shot, ending up perilously close to the water, before getting up and down from there in two for an eight.
Rose, who clinched the European Tour order of merit for the first time last year by winning the season-ending Volvo Masters, was to start yesterday's third round 10 strokes behind the pacesetting Trevor Immelman of South Africa
"Obviously there is plenty to play for but it's not the exciting weekend I was looking forward to," he said.
"It was an exciting Thursday."
