Dubai: Al Ahli has threatened to withdraw from the handball league following 'bad refereeing' in their league match against Al Shabab, which the latter won 34-33.

Mohammad Al Hammadi, the club's handball manager, said that they sent a letter to the handball association three days before the match - asking not to appoint Tunisian referees to officiate their match against Al Shabab.

"They didn't respond to us and appointed the referees for the match in which they made several mistakes which cost us the the match," said Al Hammadi.

Al Hammadi claimed that they asked to replace the Tunisian referees with other Emirati referees, because the Al Shabab coach is a Tunisian.

"The referees committed a lot of mistakes which resulted in our defeat, he said. "When the handball association invites referees from abroad, the criterion is they should be much better than our referees. However, their standard was not good and the local referees would have done much better job than them."

Future activities

Al Hammadi said they were still waiting for a response from the association regarding the appointment of the Tunisian referees for the match. He said that they might withdraw from all the handball association activities in future.

"The club's board of directors will decide about our withdrawal in their first meeting due to the unfair treatment by the referees concerned," said Al Hammadi.
