Dubai: Friends United Sports Club skipper Gavin Aguiar scored from a brilliant pass from former Indian captain Dhanraj Pillay to help his team beat Axiom 1-0 in the final of the Seiko Invitation Cup, organised by Lusitanians.
Inspired by the presence of Pillay and another former Indian captain, Viren Rasquinha, the Friends United Club, made up of young players from Mumbai, emerged winners at the picturesque Dubal hockey ground.
Solitary goal
Vian Boon D'Souza, their 18-year-old player, hogged the limelight with his brilliant dribbling skills to walk away with the player of the tournament award.
Friends United reached the final trouncing Pak Ravi in the semifinal 4-0. Victo Singh scored two goals while Vinit Nimal and Pillay scored one goal each. Axiom breezed into the final beating Emirates Group by a solitary goal scored by Zahid.
Emirates clinched the third place beating Pak Ravi 3-1 in a penalty shoot out. It was a treat to watch some of the greats of the game in action. Pillay's goal against Pak Ravi was immaculately placed.
Rasquinha too kept the pressure on the opponents with his superb range of passes.
Jovy Mathews, of Emirates, bagged the best goalkeeper award while the best defender award went to Mirsa of Axiom.
Victo Singh of Friends United bagged the best forward and highest scorer awards.
