Dubai: The South Africans were celebrating the culmination of the 'terrific trinity' as Jay Peg ran away with the $5 million Dubai Duty Free race last night.
"This is the success for the joint work put in by the three of us brothers," Selwyn Marcus told Gulf News.
Basil bought the horse as a baby from a sale and then trained it, brother Anton rode it on Saturday night and Selwyn is one of the owners of this four-year-old. "Isn't that fine teamwork between brothers?" Selwyn beamed.
"It was love at first sight for me. I had gone to a sale and saw the horse as a baby and I loved it instantly," Basil related.
He then took him to Durban and trained him. "We've believed in him from the start. Maybe that was the reason why he kept on handing us wins over the years," Basil said.
The horse was bought for an approximate Dh60,000 back in 2005. He was born of an unknown mare. "He has won eight races for us already of which two are Group Ones.
"He has kept on improving over a period of time," Selwyn related.
Anton, who was the jockey on the night, was pleased with the way the horse responded when faced with the challenge at the final stretch.
"He just kept on going doggedly. He showed us that he loves the fight till the end. He doesn't flatter to deceive for sure," Anton stated.
"The horse has kept on improving through the Carnival.
"This is definitely the highlight of my career," stated trainer Herman Brown.
