Dubai: Saeed Khalfan has announced the setting up of a new karting academy to boost the search for young UAE drivers."We have plans in order for starting a karting academy exclusively for young drivers starting from nine years," Khalfan told Gulf News at the Dubai Autodrome last week.

The academy will be housed at the existing Kartdrome situated at the Dubai Autodrome. "The response from young drivers is one of the reasons we have embarked on this new venture," Khalfan said. "Last year we had a little more than 200 attending trials to chose the three drivers for the HSBC Racing Academy. This year, we had more than 850. This only means that we are getting there slowly," Khalfan said. Of the 850 plus attending trials this year, a handful of them were girls. "They did not progress past the first stage, but that does not mean we want to neglect them. We will have separate training sessions to have a girl driver ready too," Khalfan said. The new karting academy is scheduled for a formal launch after this summer.
