Melbourne: Briton McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton cruised through an accident-filled race to take the Australian Formula One Grand Prix held at Albert Park on Sunday.

With a close 5.4 second lead over his opponents, Hamilton, No. 2 in last year's championship, started from pole position and left the destruction behind for his fifth victory in 18 Grand Prix races.

German BMW Sauber driver Nick Heidfeld was second while compatriot Nico Rosberg in a William’s came in third.

Only seven cars of the 22 competing in the first race of the season were able to complete the race, including defending champion Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari which lost steam with only five laps remaining.
