Abu Dhabi: In a mixture of heritage and modern racing, the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club (ADIMSC) will organise today the penultimate round of the UAE Wooden Powerboats Championship round Lulu Island facing the capital's corniche.
UAE's Mohammad Majid Al Room on board Atlas is on his way to win the title having won all three former races to collect full 1,200 points.
Victory today will secure the title with his countrymen Marwan Ali Al Muhairy and Thani Attig Al Qamzy chasing him respectively.
Al Muhairy steering Atlas is second with 769 points while Al Qamzy, on board the ADIMSC boat, is third with 596 points.
Al Qamzy arrived only two days ago from Portugal where he took part in the UIM Formula One Powerboats World Championship, which he ended last season winning third place.
He was unfortunate to suffer mechanical troubles as early as the first lap of the race in Portimao.
"I am keen to compensate my failure in Portimao in the FI race by winning this race."
Heritage
"I know that will not be an easy task with Mohammad (Al Room) and Marwan ( Al Muhairy) showing their best but still I have a chance of winning this race to renew my hopes of the championship title," Al Qamzy told Gulf News yesterday.
About the absence of drivers from Europe, Asia and the US, Al Qamzy said, "It is a different race because it is closely linked with our marine heritage and that is why it is only for the local and the GCC drivers as all the countries of the GCC states have lived the same life in the past and used the same boats to earn their living and as means of transportation."
