Abu Dhabi: Third seed Adel Samir led the way into the quarterfinals of the Division 1 section in the Sheraton-Al Ghazal Transport Abu Dhabi Squash Open after a hard fought 3-2 result over Mo'en Ahmad here at the Sheraton courts.
Progressing with him in Division One were Jamal Boshor and Andreas Baptist, according to a press release from the organisers.
Boshor lost his concentration in the middle games before claiming the tie 15-10, 15-11, 10-15, 11-15, 15-10 and Baptist edged out Nigel Millins 15-10, 13-15, 15-7, 15-12.
Emad Gohar overcame some first-game blues to get the better of Mahmoud Abu Atta 10-15, 15-4, 15-12, 15-11 in a Division Two opening-round match, while John van Hoogestraten beat Saleh Al Amree in five games to join him in the second round.
First hurdle
In Division Three, Yahya Suwaidi cleared the first hurdle with a facile 15-5, 15-13, 15-11 victory over Hani Yousuf, while Bashar Jitan posted a 15-9 15-6 14-17 15-9 win over Werner Webber. Zeyad Hasanein overcame Yousuf Helal in a junior under-15 category clash by a 3-0 margin.
Earlier, Mike Dravitzki moved into the second round with a straight-games victory over John van Hoogestraten.
The veteran Kiwi, who had to overcome a tough first hurdle, won the second match in the division-one 15-10, 17-14, 10-8.
Mo'en Ahmad clinched a similar win over Chris Grant, 15-10, 17-15, 15-3.
Full distance
Dieter Eppler and Shobaith Gupta had to go the full distance in Division Two.
Eppler got the better of Antoun Ganem 15-10 9-15 7-15 15-1 15-12 and Gupta edged out Mark Griffin 7-15 15-13 15-12 10-15 15-11.
Mayro Fascio beat Paul Bell in three games and Mohammad Abdul Fatah overcame Farooq Ali by the same score in a couple of other encounters in the same division.
In a Division Three junior category engagement, Wendy Griffin downed Jirar Shawwa 15-8, 15-7, 5-15, 15-8 while Bader Tayyar overcame Hussain Hassanein 3-0.
