Dubai:  The UAE volleyball association has signed a contract with the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), confirming the Dubai Open beach volleyball event in October as part of the 2008 World Tour. The agreement was signed in Lausanne by FIVB president Dr Ruben Acosta and Mohammad Jalfar, UAE volleyball board chairman.

"It is a pleasure to sign this agreement with our friends in the UAE. This exciting development in the beach volleyball is the first step on the road to a long and prosperous future collaboration between FIVB and the UAE national association," said Acosta.

"The 31st FIVB World Congress in Dubai in June will be a spectacular example of what we can achieve in the Middle East, as will the Dubai Open for beach volleyball. There is also a huge plan for volleyball in the area," Acosta said.

Jalfar said that 2008 will be the UAE's year. "I told Dr Acosta that this will be the UAE's year. The contract which we signed is part of a big project that includes all the events mentioned by Dr Acosta. Players and fans will have a great time in October, when the weather also gets nice."

He said that there will be Dh1 million prize money for the first Abu Dhabi international Women's Volleyball Cup, with the top eight teams in the world taking part.
