Dubai: The 31st Congress of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) will be inaugurated at the Grand Hayat on Monday under the patronage of Shaikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and Minister of Finance.
Shaikh Hamdan will be honoured by the FIVB President Robin Acosta with the highest decoration of the FIVB: The Golden Decoration.
Dr Amro Alwaani, the FIVB deputy president, said that the congress will discuss the president's decision to quit his seat.
"Mr Acosta decided in the FIVB board last meeting in Lussane he wants to quit. This will be discussed in the congress in its two days meeting in Dubai," said Dr Alwaani to Gulf News yesterday.
Long reign
Acosta was elected FIVB president in 1984 during the 19th congress held in Los Angles during the Olympic Games.
The congress sees the participation of 180 countries. They will discuss many issues on the agenda such as marketing, 2012 vision and changes to the rules and regulations
The congress is also to discuss the reports of the continental federations, Europe, Africa, Asia, South America, North and Central America.
The hosts of the coming tournaments will submit reports on their preparations for events such as the Beijing Olympics and London 2012 Olympics, Grand Championships 2009 in Japan, World beach volleyball 2009 in Norway, and World ladies championships 2009 in Japan.
