It's the everyday employees at the barclays Dubai Tennis Championships who make sure everything runs smoothly.
Picture this: you've bought tickets for the best seats in the tournament and the match has already started. You race to the stadium, up the stairs, not expecting to be welcomed with any enthusiasm. However, you arrive and are greeted with a beaming smile from an usherette, like Vangie Veneranda, who quickly and efficiently shows you to your seat.
For Veneranda, 36, originally from the Philippines, customer service is all in a day's work.
What is your usual job at Dubai Duty Free?
I'm a sales assistant in the arrivals area at Dubai International Airport.
What is your role at the Tennis Championships?
I'm an usherette, so I help and assist people to their seats. We have to maintain organisation of the seats. We also make sure that we organise the spectators so they are happy and enjoy the whole event.
How long have you lived in Dubai?
I've been here for 11 years now.
Have you worked at the Dubai Tennis Championships before?
Yes, I was here last year. I think this year's event will end up being busier than last year.
Do the spectators behave?
I do stay by the seating while the game is on, but I don't have to tell anyone to sit down or be quiet. Most of the spectators that come here have been before and they know the rules and regulations of tennis. They're very helpful and very organised and also nice, so it's a very easy job.
Have you ever had any problems with any spectators?
Last year there were no major emergencies. However, there were some people collapsing. That was just from the heat we had last year.
Which player would you most like to watch on court?
I was most looking forward to seeing Amelie Mauresmo playing. There are so many good players, especially now. I'm also excited about meeting Andy Roddick — I hope I can meet him.
What would you say if you met Andy Roddick?
I would tell him that he's a good player and I think he's the number one. I don't know what his ranking is, but he's very famous.
Are you going to ask him for his autograph?
I don't know about asking for his autograph. I would ask him if I can hug him — it will be very good if I get to shake his hand. I'm also hoping to get my picture taken with him if I have the chance.
Would you be an usherette again?
Yes, I hope to do it next year.
