Fantasy story worlds, fashion shows and the mini-Olympic games it can only mean one thing. Yes, it's that time of the year again Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) is back.
Bigger and better than ever, the DSS team will tonight launch 65 days of festivities based around the annual theme, which this year is called Tens of Surprises.
Signature events at the core of the entertainment programme will entertain and excite people of all ages and nationalities with high-quality performances and shows across Dubai shopping malls.
The opening ceremony for 800 invited guests and held at the Dubai Dolphinarium, Creek Park, can be watched on SAMA Dubai TV from 8pm. Here's a glimpse of the fun ahead.
World of Stories, (June 21 – June 28), Al Ghurair City
Recreate fantasy worlds of fairytales and fables as actors bring the stage to life with celebrated tales including 'Little Red Riding Hood' and 'Sleeping Beauty'. Shows will be held in English and Arabic.
Kids Fashion Week, (July 3 – July 9), Dubai Festival City
A glitzy fashion show will showcase some of the latest trends in kids fashion from across the region as well as offer budding fashion models some time on the ramp.
Kids Olympics Games, (July 11 – July 17), Ibn Battuta Mall
A competitive but fun-filled series of sport activities for children, The Kids Olympic Games will bring out the competition in youngsters and parents alike. Races this year include Baby Crawling, Tricycle Race, Rattle Throwing, Baby Marathon, Spoon Race, Baby Walker, Baby Dancing Contest and Remote Control Car Race.
The Collectors, (July 15 – July 22), WAFI
An exhibition of various artefacts and collectibles, visitors can find seasoned regional and local collectors and prodigies with their valuable treasures.
Min Bladi Al Emarat, (July 24 – July 31 ), Ibn Battuta Mall
A traditional event that focuses on Emirati heritage activities, Min Bladi has been a major crowd puller since it first featured in 2004. The main attraction of Min Bladi is the competitions that are held to pick the best displays of local food and culture.
Arts Oasis, (July 29 – Aug 6), WAFI
Arts Oasis 2008 features contemporary pieces by resident artists from around the world. Visitors to the event this year can this year buy the exquisite sculptures and paintings.
Shayla and Abaya Fashion, (Aug 7– Aug 11), BurJuman
A gathering of talented shayla and abaya designers within the UAE and from around the GCC.
Photography Exhibition, (Aug 12 – Aug 18 ), Deira City Centre
An opportunity for photographers to display their creativity, this exhibition attracts some of the best talent behind a camera in the country. The competition is open to photographers across UAE and the GCC and on August 19, a prize ceremony will be held to coincide with the World Photography Day.
Mall of the Emirates
Acrobatics, aquatics and aerial humour will all feature this DSS at Mall of the Emirates.
A variety of acts will take place at the centre throughout the festival, ranging from the graceful and balletic, to the comical and energetic, as talented entertainers from across the performing arts spectrum showcase their skills to keep visitors amused.
From Thursday to June 28, catch a stunning demonstration of synchronised swimming.
Deira City Centre
Visitors to City Centre can take a walk on the wild side, watch some cool hip-hop choreography, experience the wonder of music and plenty more over the nine-and-a-half weeks' of mall activities.
The festivities kick off on Thursday with an act sure to please lovers of urban music as the country's top dancers will be rocking the crowd with their hip-hop freestyle choreography. They'll be playing three sets a day until June 25.

Summer in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi's got its own treats lined up for the next two months. “Summer in Abu Dhabi" will be an eight-week-long series of events at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, with attractions for all the family.
The focus will be as much on education as entertainment, with seven “islands" dotted around the massive (and thankfully air-conditioned) Centre.
Discovery Island's main attraction is the remarkable Robot Zoo, an interactive exhibition that will use animatronics to show how animals work.
Imagination Island will feature an inflatable cinema with a special beanbag seating area to watch episodes from the SpaceToons TV Channel.
Adventure Island will be headlined by the 'Science of Spying' interactive educational exhibition sponsored by the Abu Dhabi Police. | Fun Island will offer various traditional youth-oriented activities such as a bungee trampoline and river and train rides.
Imagination Island will feature an inflatable cinema with a special beanbag seating area to watch episodes from the SpaceToons TV Channel.
Creativity Island will showcase circus shows, featuring juggling, stilt walking, acrobatics, face painting and tight rope walking.
The Action Island has demonstrations by freestyle BMX bikers, soccer players and DJs, climbing, football, basketball and rodeo bull riding.
Culture Island has been planned in coordination with the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage to enhance knowledge about the UAE's rich culture, focusing on the folkloric dances, calligraphy, traditional music, food and various art forms.
Summer in Abu Dhabi will run at ADNEC from June 26 to August 18, 2008. The show is open from 12 pm to 9pm daily. Tickets are priced at Dh30 for adults and Dh20 for children under 16. All children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
