They are known as the bakery to the stars back in California and now Del Mar Cakes have brought their designer confectionery creations to Dubai.

The company - which is known as Rossmoor Pastries in the US - made its UAE debut with a three-day Cupcake Weekend at the Mercato Shopping Mall to coincide with the Dubai Summer Surprises 2008.

The Cupcake Weekend featured a range of confectionary-themed events from workshops on icing techniques, cake sampling, and decorating competitions for children and their parents.

"Visitors had a lot of fun learning about the difference between muffins and cupcakes, various ways of decorating them and how to make different kinds of icing from chef Mahmoud Reyad," said organiser Brian Furtado.

Popular

The children at the event preferred cupcakes with lots of colours, icing and sprinkles while highly decorated wedding cakes were also featured.

Furtado said the most popular cupcake flavours were vanilla, lemon and chocolate and the company offered tasty icings such as white butter cream, cream cheese, royal white, velvet chocolate and banana nut.

Managing director Kamal Syed said Del Mar Cakes were bringing a very American experience to Dubai. "People are going to see many different concepts coming out in the next three to six months."

Syed continued that the trend to use cupcakes instead of full-sized cakes was already popular at weddings mand corporate events in the US.

"We are seeing younger people have cupcake stands instead of large cakes at their weddings — it's more fun, more colourful and different."

What else is up this DSS?

A world of fantasy

Kids and parents alike will be able to enjoy their favourite fairytales at Al Ghurair City at the DSS 2008's World of Stories event.

The event will recreate the fantasy worlds of fairytales and fables such as Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty.

Organisers said the event was such a hit last year that this year's event will have one purpose-built stage in addition to four interactive corners for children, including the Mad Hatter's Tea Party, and a meet and greet event featuring the stars of the shows.

The shows will be held in English and Arabic and runs until June 28.

Highlighting Emirati heritage

The Min Bladi Al Emarat event at Ibn Battuta Mall is a traditional event of the DSS 2008 that focuses on Emirati heritage activities.

Min Bladi has been a major crowd puller since it was first featured in 2004. A main attraction is the competitions held to pick the best displays of local food and culture.

Competitions include Popular Cuisine Contest, Best Poem Contest, Emarati Coffee Contest, Best Hand-Made Product Contest and Best Popular Dress Competition.

The event runs until July 31.
