Here's the lowdown on the ladies aiming for glory.
Ever wondered what the top tennis stars get up to in their spare time? How they like to relax, what sort of music they enjoy and what films they love? tabloid! spills the beans on some of their favourite pastimes.
Ana Ivanovic
Ana started playing tennis at the age of 5, after watching the sport on TV. Her mother, Dragana, is a lawyer and her father, Miroslav, is a businessman. Her brother, Milos, is four years Ana's junior and likes playing basketball.
She likes watching films, especially thrillers. She also likes to read — history and Greek mythology — and to listen to pop and r 'n' b music. She loves the TV shows 24, Lost and Prison Break, and enjoys shopping and fashion. Her favourite food is sushi, and her favourite drink is water or fresh orange juice.
In September 2007, she began studying finance at a private university that allows her to take exams online.
She admires Roger Federer for his professionalism on and off the court. Her superstition is to not walk on the lines of the court.
She sometimes prepares for matches by playing Sudoku or backgammon in the locker room.
She speaks fluent English, Serbian and some Spanish. She was featured alongside Daniela Hantuchova in Sony Ericsson's first ever tennis-themed TV commercial, Never Miss A Shot, in July 2006. In September 2007, she was named a Unicef National Ambassador to Serbia.
Justine Henin
Justine recently received the 2008 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year, only the third female tennis player to win the award after Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams. She was also awarded the Great Cross of the Order of the Crown, given by Belgian King Albert II at the Royal Palace in Brussels, and the Trophée National du Merite Sportif from the Belgian government — only the second time in history that tennis has been honoured.
She created her own charity, Justine's Winners Circle, to provide joy and hope to children with cancer. The original French name is Les Vingt Coeurs de Justine, which translates into "the 20 hearts of Justine." The charity gives financial assistance to families, grants child cancer patients their wishes and organises meetings with Justine.
Coached by Carlos Rodriguez since she was 14, she has included hip hop dancing in her training to improve her movement and fitness. Her favourite place to visit is Montreal, her superstition is to avoid walking on the lines of the court between points, and the tennis player she most admired is Steffi Graf for her elegance on court and career accomplishments. She went skydiving following her 2004 Olympic win, and her favourite music artists include Céline Dion.
Marion Bartoli
Marion is coached by her father, Walter, who is a chess-playing doctor. He introduced Marion to tennis at the age of 6. Her mother, Sophie, is a nurse who enjoys singing and her brother, Frank, is in the French army.
The entire family plays tennis. Marion dedicated herself to tennis because she was so good at her school studies that she found she had lots of spare time.
She loves the movies Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. She's also a fan of the book, Le Pianiste.
Other favourites include her two cats and her mother's apple pie. Her favourite pastime is painting, but it is restricted to when she is at home because her oil paintings take so long to dry that she cannot travel with her work. Her other interests include jet skiing, volleyball, basketball, listening to music and watching movies.
Anna Chakvetadze
Anna is coached by father, Djambuli Chakvetadze. She was introduced to tennis by her mother, Natalia, at the age of 8. She has a brother, Roman, who is 11 years her junior.
Anna attends Moscow University. Her interests include reading — especially detective novels. She likes all types of music and her favourite movie is Troy. Before taking up tennis she enjoyed playing the piano. She also enjoys going to concerts and the theatre. When at home, she likes relaxing with friends.
She considers herself ambitious and her pet hate is people who are mean.
She describes herself as: "Not just a tennis player, but a normal young lady who just tries to enjoy life and make the most of it."
However, late last year she suffered a frightening experience when her house in the suburbs of Moscow was broken into and she and her family were tied up.
Elena Dementieva
Elena is one of several players who is coached by her mother, Vera. Her father, Viatcheslav, is an electrical engineer and she has an older brother, Vsevolod, who is a university student. When she isn't playing tennis Elena enjoys skiing and playing chess.
The tennis player she most admires is Martina Hingis, because she says she played smartly — like playing chess on a tennis court. Elena loves animals and has a Yorkshire Terrier named Patrick. One of her most memorable experiences was observing Australian animals in the wild.
She graduated from a special language school, taking French in 1998, and then took English lessons there in 2000. She has played in front of former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, who was present at her historic 2004 Roland Garros final when she played Anastasia Myskina in the first all-Russian Grand Slam final.
Svetlana Kuznetsova
Svetlana trains at the Sanchez-Casal Academy in Barcelona. Her father is Alexandr Kuznetsov, cycling coach of six Olympic champions and world champions. He now coaches Lokomotiv, the best cycling club in Russia. He also coached Svetlana's mother, Galina Tsareva, a six-time world champion and holder of 20 world records, as well as Svetlana's brother, Nikolai Kuznetsov, a silver medallist at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
Her favourite movies are Love Actually and Save the Last Dance. She is rarely seen without her iPod and she likes listening to all types of chart music, especially hip hop. Among her favourite artists are 50 Cent, T-Pain, Chris Brown and Lil Wayne.
She is universally popular among the other players and is known as the joker of the locker room. She was described by Roger Federer as one of the players he most admires.
