A public park is to be built in Umm Al Quwain, after an official said the emirate badly needed one. The bill for the new park, which could cost as much as Dh15 million, is being paid for by the Ministry of Finance and Industry. Work to level the ground at the park's 500,000-square-metre site, which is 3km from the Sharjah to Ras Al Khaimah highway, has already begun. The first phase of development, a Dh5-million scheme involving the creation of the park's boundary wall and gates, will start soon and take about a year. Thereafter, landscaping will turn the land into an attractive park with a playground for children. An official at Umm Al Quwain Municipality said the emirate lacked a good park where families could go and relax.
"It will be like Safa Park or Al Mamzar Park in Dubai, although not quite on the same scale. The park is going to be somewhere people can go on the weekend and have a nice day out and a barbecue. "Umm Al Quwain needs a big park. The public facilities are not at that level yet. It is very much needed. I think the public will be very happy when the park opens because it will be the first time they will have a facility of this class. "Every emirate should have a big park. We need large areas where children and families can go," he told Gulf News. There was little land available in the old parts of Umm Al Quwain for new projects, he said, but the emirate's new areas had plenty of space available. "The municipality is working there and making it flat because there are some depressions at the site. The Aqua Park in Umm Al Quwain has been very successful and we hope this will be as well," he said. The official said the park's location meant it would have an adequate water supply. Lack of water, he said, is one reason why established parks in the emirate deteriorate. The park in Umm Al Quwain, which has a population of 41,000, would be developed gradually over a long period.
