Vidya Balan has had a rocking 2007 with three big hits — Guru, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyya.

In Bhool Bhulaiyya, she delivered a spellbinding performance as a schizophrenic character but, somehow, she didn’t get adequate recognition at most of the award functions.

But she was glad that she won a nomination in the Best Actress category at Zee Cine Awards, 2008.

Vidya performed to her hit numbers at the award function in London, where the audience gave her a rousing response.

Vidya speaks her heart out on her hits, award functions, fashion mishaps and alleged romantic link with Shahid Kapur.

What do you think you did right last year that resulted in big hits with Guru, Heyy Babyy and Bhool Bhulaiyya?

It is all God’s grace. I believe things will happen when they are meant to happen.

All the three films were different and good and made with focused energy.

I was fortunate to be in these films and have to credit my directors, producers, costars and the entire team that helped me to portray my characters successfully.

Despite being highly appreciated for your performance in Bhool Bhulaiyya, why do you think you were ignored at most of the award functions?

Actually, I don’t know and I am disappointed that I was not nominated at all.

Whether you get an award or not is a different thing but not getting nominated for a role that everyone appreciated was surprising.

I really worked hard on my performance but I can’t figure out why it was missed out in previous awards. Probably, the juries at those awards know best.

So do you feel finally vindicated after being nominated in the Best Actress category at Zee Cine Awards, 2008?

I am glad and grateful to the jury of the Zee Cine Awards for acknowledging my performance.

It goes to show that there are people out there who do appreciate my work. Moreover, it is a nomination for the entire team, which put in its best to bring my character to life on screen.

Particularly, I have to thank Priyadarshan (director of Bhool Bhulaiyya) for extracting such a performance from me.

Were you disappointed with poor audience response to your critically acclaimed Halla Bol?

I think Halla Bol was a fabulous film. It is sad that it didn’t work at the box office.

Those who saw the film had good things to say about it but probably the audience wasn’t in a mood for serious stuff.

While filming with Ajay Devgan and Raj Kumar Santoshi I had a lot of fun. I think Raj Kumar Santoshi is a fantastic director and I had a great experience working under him.

What do you have to say about the flak you received for your poor costumes in Heyy Babyy that Manish Malhotra (costume designer) refused to take blame for?

Well, I believe the way I am portrayed on screen is a result of team effort — whether it is my costume, makeup or overall appearance.

Sometimes, it can go wrong but too much has been made of it. I don’t want to go into the Manish Malhotra chapter but, definitely, I will try to ensure that I take care of my looks and costumes in the future.

What about the rumours of you being romantically involved with Shahid Kapur during the making of your forthcoming film, Kismet Konnection?

Actually, I don’t know when all these rumours started. I was shooting for a couple of months with Shahid in Canada while all these stories were doing the rounds in Mumbai.

It was only when some of our unit members spoke of it on the sets that we came to know about these baseless rumours.

I have just ignored them as I share a cordial relationship with Shahid, who is a great guy and a fabulous co-star.

So when do you see yourself getting a serious
relationship?

Well, I haven’t planned a deadline and I am also waiting for the right man to enter my life.

I believe in destiny and it will happen only when it has to happen.
