Kabul: Taliban rebels blew up a power station in a southern Afghan province on Saturday, killing two people and wounding eight others, an official said.

"Two employees of the station were killed and six people were wounded in the explosion," said provincial police chief Hussain Andiwal.

Provincial district chief Abdul Manaf said rescuers were still evacuating people from the site of the blast in in Girishk district in Helmand province.

The power station, the main source of electricity for people in the area, was severely damaged in the blast, he said.
