Tirana: Sixteen people including two children have been killed after a boat carrying 20 partygoers sank overnight in a lake in Albania, police said on Thursday.
Authorities recovered 16 bodies from the lake: seven men, seven women and 5-year-old twin boys, whose birthday was being celebrated.
The boat was carrying twenty people despite having a capacity of only seven and capsized in Lake Farka, which is about five kilometers east of Albania’s capital, Tirana.
The victims were being transported from a restaurant before the boat sand shortly after midnight, a Tirana police spokeswoman said.
Police were investigating whether the people caused the boat to capsize because they were.
The restaurant, whose owner was driving the boat and is among the dead, has been shut down.
