Manila: A Filipino who was jailed for 14 years in Bangladesh for smuggling gold was ordered released on Friday.
Wilfredo Rosales was arrested in the Bangladesh southern port city of Chittagong in 1993 on charges of gold smuggling and convicted in 1997, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in Manila.
Dhaka jail authorities turned over Rosales to the Philippine Embassy in Bangladesh for repatriation to the Philippines.
Consul Alfredo M. Borlongan received Rosales on Friday from Bangladesh authorities. He was scheduled to arrive in Manila on Saturday.
Prior to Rosales' release, Philippine Ambassador to Dhaka Zenaida Tacorda-Rabago requested President Iajuddin Ahmad's intercession.
Rosales was released just nine days after Tacorda-Rabago made the appeal to the Bangladeshi leader.
