Santiago: Heavy rains and flooding have killed five people and forced 13,000 people to evacuate from their homes in Chile, the government said on Thursday.

Two people died in landslides, one was struck by a boulder and another was hit by a falling tree. One man died of hypothermia.

Streets in the port town of Valparaiso have been flooded after heavy rain during two storm fronts that began on the weekend.

In the region of Maule, at least 7,8888 people were displaced and the National Emergency Office said the number could rise as rescue operations continue.

Classes for 390,000 students in the Santiago area were canceled after drinking water was tainted by sediment.
