Beijing: The Olympic flame was greeted by elated crowds as it passed through Beijing’s Tiananmen Square on Wednesday, drawging the global relay to a close.

The tumultuous relay has been marred by repeated protests concerning China’s human rights accord and its treatment of Tibet.

Foreign protesters attempted to spoil the Beijing relay with pro-Tibet signs but police rushed in and arrested two Britons and two Americans.

Chinese basketball icon, Yao Ming, carried the flame in Tiananmen Square, while excited children celebrated its arrival.

The celebration in Beijing brings an end to the torch’ chaotic international journey that included sometimes violent protests and demonstrations at most stops.

The Olympics will kick-off on Friday, with an opening ceremony expected to be attended by many international leaders.
