Mumbai: An angry crowd stoned a bus in Mumbai yesterday, killing one person after police arrested a fiery populist politician for inciting violence against outsiders, police said.
The arrest of Raj Thackeray sparked fears of a widespread outbreak of ethnic violence in of Maharashtra and its capital, Mumbai, where he has been campaigning against migrants, saying they were taking jobs from locals.
Mumbai police arrested the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief from his residence in Shivaji Park and took him in a police van at around 4pm and produced him in a court. Thee hours later, he was granted bail on a personal bond.
The police also took Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi into custody from his home in Colaba and brought him before the Bhoiwada court where he too was granted bail.
