Mumbai: The budget session of the Maharashtra legislature commenced on Monday with the Opposition disrupting the new governor's speech demanding a waiver of all farmers' loans.

Jamir was sworn in as governor on Sunday after former governor S.M. Krishna resigned to return to his home state of Karnataka, where he is expected to play a key role in turning aroundthe Congress' fortunes in forthcoming assembly polls.

Even as Jamir entered the Vidhan Bhavan, members of the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party alliance and others from the Swatantra Bharat Party and the Peasants and Workers Party shouted slogans demanding a complete waiver of loans to farmers with land holdings of more than five acres.

More than 1,000 farmers, unable to pay back loans, have committed suicide in the cotton-growing region of Vidarbha in the past six months.
