New Delhi: The government has spent more than Rs8 billion (Dh727 million) in the last three years to clean up many Indian rivers, but major rivers such as the Ganga and the Yamuna continue to flow dirty, the parliamentary standing committee of the Ministry of Environment and Forests was informed on Tuesday.

A report to the committee by the ministry said central and state governments had added sewage treatment capacity to the tune of 1,011 million litres a day and had carried out 138 low-cost sanitation schemes in riverbanks during these three years.

"However, the problem observed is that the state governments do not have adequate resources to undertake proper operations and maintenance of assets created under the NRCP [National River Conservation Plan]. This leads to under-utilisation of the assets created and reflects poorly on the impact of the works done."
