Mumbai: The death toll in the fire that engulfed a Byculla industrial estate in South-Central Mumbai on Monday rose to nine, as another victim succumbed to burns yesterday.
In the blaze that took 12 fire engines and eight water tankers more than five hours to bring under control, 56 people were injured and admitted to Sir J.J. Hospital and KEM Hospital. There were three women among the dead.
Storing chemicals
A case has been registered against the owner of a chemical unit, Baljit Gandhi of Smruti Aerosols, in the Retiwala industrial estate for allegedly storing inflammable chemicals in his premises. Gandhi was manufacturing aerosols which were then used in the production of fake perfumes and deodorants, police said.
However, so far no one has been arrested. He has been charged with not taking adequate safety measures.
